Looking Over The President's Shoulder

Looking Over the President's Shoulder is based on the true story of Alonzo Fields, who served as the White House chief butler for a quarter of a century and during four presidential administrations; Hoover, Franklin Roosevelt, Truman and Eisenhower. Alonzo Fields was an African American, an elegant, educated and profoundly cultured man, who more than anything wanted to be a classical singer. Instead, circumstances found him relegated to a servant's job in the most prestigious house in America, The White House.

Performances will be December 4, 2010 at 2:00 PM and 7:30 PM, and December 5, 2010 at 2:00 PM in the Lyric Theatre, 135 College Ave, Blacksburg, VA 24060.

Persephone

In collaboration with Tony Award-winning playwright Warren Leight, composer Ben Neill, and singer/actor Mimi Goese, the Virginia Tech and Brooklyn Academy of Music's new production of "Persephone" re-imagines the classic myth as a spectacular 19th-century theatrical tableau. "Persephone" is infused with rock and electronica, as well as evocative visuals and features ATOB players and crew.

After closing in Blacksburg, "Persephone" will continue on to the Brooklyn Academy of Music's (BAM) Next Wave Festival, where actress Julia Stiles (Bourne films, "Oleanna" on Broadway) will play the title role and some of the Virginia Tech students will have the opportunity to play a part in the festival performance in New York. Stiles recently visited Virginia Tech for a question-and-answer session where she fielded questions from students and discussed her career.

The production is directed by Virginia Tech faculty member Bob McGrath, also co-founder and artistic director of Ridge Theater. McGrath has directed theatre and opera at venues including the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Lincoln Center, The American Repertory Theater, Carnegie Hall's Zankel Hall, Vineyard Theater, and Arts at St. Ann's. McGrath is the recipient of three OBIE awards.
